How to Choose a SaaS Development Agency

What to look for when evaluating a dev agency for your SaaS product — beyond portfolio and pricing.

Choosing a SaaS development agency is one of the highest-stakes vendor decisions a founder makes. The wrong partner burns runway, ships brittle code, or disappears after launch. The right one becomes an extension of your team. Here is a practical framework we use with clients — and what we recommend you evaluate before signing anything.

1. Look beyond the portfolio screenshot

A pretty Dribbble shot tells you almost nothing about maintainability, deployment, or whether the agency actually built the backend. Ask for:

  • Live URLs you can click through — including admin or dashboard flows if relevant
  • A brief technical summary: stack, hosting, team size on the project
  • What happened after launch: ongoing support, handoff, or client took over internally

2. Evaluate SaaS-specific experience

Building a marketing website is not the same as building multi-tenant SaaS. Your agency should demonstrate experience with authentication, billing, role-based access, API design, and observability. Red flags include vague answers about Stripe webhooks, database migrations, or how they handle tenant isolation.

3. Understand who actually writes the code

Many agencies sell senior strategy and outsource execution to junior freelancers. Ask who is on your project day-to-day, their timezone overlap with yours, and whether you get direct access to engineers or only an account manager.

4. Clarify ownership and handoff upfront

You should own the source code, deployment accounts, and documentation when the project ends. Get this in writing before work starts. Avoid agencies that host everything on their infrastructure with no export path.

5. Compare engagement models honestly

  • Fixed scope / fixed price — best for defined MVPs with clear requirements
  • Time & materials — better for evolving products where scope will change
  • Dedicated team — ideal when you need ongoing capacity without hiring in-house

Questions to ask on the first call

  1. What similar SaaS products have you shipped in the last 12 months?
  2. How do you handle scope changes mid-project?
  3. What does your typical MVP timeline look like for our feature set?
  4. Who maintains the codebase after launch?
  5. Can we speak to a recent client reference?
